Western Swing is a genre that was popular in the 1940's and 50's. It combines big band and jazz music with Texas roots music. Well known Western Swing bands include Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, and the Spade Cooley Band. Susie Blue and the Lonesome Fellas is made up of seasoned Chicago jazz and country musicians that have been featured by a variety of radio stations around the world, including jazz and country radio, BBC Radio, and NPR. The Wall Street Journal, DownBeat and the Chicago Tribune have also featured their music. Members of the band are well known and several of them are Grammy winners or nominees.
Susie Blue, AKA Solitaire Miles, has been singing jazz, big band and western swing music in Chicago and in New York City for the past 20 years and her vocal style has been compared to Billie Holiday and Patsy Cline. She studied voice at DePaul University in Chicago in the early 1990's and then worked with bandleaders there such as the legendary jazz saxophonist Von Freeman. She also worked in New York City with trumpeter Doc Cheatham, who was Cab Calloway’s lead trumpeter. Most of the music she has performed in her career has been big band swing and jazz. She and her husband, John, now call La Porte “home”.
