Director of Communications
Reports Directly To: President and/or Vice President
Full-Time Salary Position
 
SUMMARY
 
Provides communications and design expertise to the Chamber.  Acts as the administrative control point for media contacts.  Designs, executes or scans artwork and copy in order to promote the Chamber and Chamber activities.  Holds position of staff liaison to Membership Services Division.  Provides design and IT assistance to Chamber staff for various printed materials.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Advances the goals and positive, professional image of the Chamber by acting as a major link between the Chamber, its members and the general public.
  • Formulates concepts for artwork and copy to be presented in various forms of communication.
  • Writes copy for various publications and brochures.
  • Design and Maintain Chamber website.
  • Works directly with webmaster for website to ensure the site is working properly.
  • Updates computer software programs as needed.
  • Responsible for maintaining Chamber computer system (software, hardware).
  • Coordinates and produces marketing pieces about the Chamber.
  • Reviews final layout, suggests improvements, and confers with department for any additional changes or for approval of various pieces.
  • Serves as staff liaison to the Communications Committee.
  • Coordinates and produces the Annual Report for Chamber members.
  • Coordinates and produces the Chamber Weekly Newsletter and all other written materials.
  • Develops and produces the Business Resource Guide and ensures its completion for delivery to Chamber members by end of the second quarter of each year.  Works with print company to secure advertising in the directory in order to offset the total production cost.
  • Develops and produces Specialty Promotional Publications.
  • Develops and updates the Industrial Directory and Clubs & Organizations Directory.
  • Develops a Marketing Plan for the Chamber.
  • Develops and producing Annual Meeting presentations.
  • Writes news releases.
  • Reviews all Chamber member press releases for consideration.
  • Coordinates Annual Meeting, Golf Outings, Business Expo, Chamber Member Appreciation Holiday Party, and other special events.
  • Plans the annual Salute to Business Luncheon activities and coordinates the Corporate Citizenship of the Year Awards Program.
  • Responsible for requested photography at Chamber Events.
  • Maintains website for the Greater La Porte Chamber of Commerce, Sunflower Fair and the La Porte Political Action Committee (LPAC)
  • Helps develop an annual Program of Action for the Chamber.
  • Oversees and edits radio materials
  • Take care of entries to Facebook, twitter, and all other social media
  • Other duties may be assigned.
 
OTHER DUTIES:
  • Contributes to team effort of staff in accomplishing related projects and programs.
  • Performs other such relevant duties as assigned.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of newsletter, brochure, manual/directory development, layout and production processes.
  • Excellent skills in concept development, writing, editing and proofing.
  • Computer literate with excellent proficiency in desktop publishing software and good working knowledge of word processing (Quark, Illustrator, Photoshop or Microsoft Word, Publisher, Excel, FrontPage, etc. preferred).
 
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
  • Associates or Bachelor's Degree in Communications or Graphic Design, and/or a combination of education and equivalent related experience.
  • Five years directly related experience in communications, newsletter writing, layout and graphic design.

RELATIONSHIPS:
 
Reports directly to the Chamber President.  Contact with all levels of personnel within the Chamber.  Contact with Chamber of Commerce Members, Potential Members, the General Public, suppliers and members of the media.  
 
REASONING ABILITY:
 
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • This person must be able to use hands to type on personal computer keyboard and view a computer screen for up to 5-7 hours per day; ability to hear accurately and speak clearly over the telephone.
