Presentation Summary:
“Although there has been a massive amount of writing on poverty by sociologists, topics related to culture and the person, such as agency, motivation, self-efficacy, and connections to culture have often been gingerly sidestepped and undertheorized” say Ines Jindra and Michael Jindra who have published a lengthy study in the Journal of Poverty.
To help remedy this, Bridges Out of Poverty, a national antipoverty organization that helps people move toward upward mobility, will discuss ways to engage and empower the underequipped workforce. This presentation is geared toward employers, Human Resource Professionals and social resource coordinators and is designed to show the necessity and efficacy of the program locally.
Bridges out of Poverty deals with the controversial issue of culture and poverty through its interactions with low-income individuals. The curriculum and process focuses on helping participants become more reflexive by analyzing their past life and potential futures through a social class analysis. There is much theoretical debate over culture and action/agency and specifically the distinction between practical and discursive consciousness (or declarative and non-declarative culture), and issues of agency. It has been studied and shown how this theoretical process is accomplished in the organization by providing people with the opportunity to change their habits, skills, “cultured capacities” and “repertoires,” which can help them get out of poverty.
While many in the business community know that poverty exists, few are able to engage in meaningful conversations with their effected population. This presentation will provide not only the poverty data and demographics, but also the tools and means in which employers can recognize and opportunity for greater employee engagement.
