Fantasia Spring Concert- La Porte County Symphony Orchestra
LCSO is proud to present their 45th annual Spring Classic Concert once again at Holdcraft Performing Arts Center at 317 Detroit Street in Michigan City on March 11 at 3pm. Children and students attend for FREE while adults pay $20, and seniors 65 and wiser pay $15. Tickets are available at the door and online. Light concessions will be available during intermission. Fantasia is proudly dedicated in loving memory and in honor of the musical legacy of Katherine "Gerry" McCeary and made possible by her commitment to the symphony and the generosity of her estate.
This year, Maestro Philip J. Bauman beings back the works of Peter Boyer with, "The Dream Lives On: A Portrait of the Kennedy Brothers," a stunning multimedia piece which celebrates the legacy of John F. Fitzgerald, Robert F. Kennedy and Edward M. Kennedy. This presentation will intertwine speeches each man gave as narrated by local favorites, Howard Brenneman, Nanda Danitschek, Greg Fruth, and Bruce Johnson accompanied by a wordless chorus, featuring Illumination and choir director by Becky Osborn, all set to reflective and moving music.
Fantasia begins with a selection full of character, wit, sentimentality, charm and sarcasm in Erich Korngold's, "Much Ado about Nothing Suite" inspired as intimate incidental music to the admired Shakespearian play. The Spring concert has a distinctively British - Irish undercurrent and also includes, "Fantasia on British Sea Songs," a staple of the annual Proms concerts in England for years, and the hidden work of Arthur Sullivan of the dynamic duo, Gilbert & Sullivan. The orchestra will explore this hidden gem, his one and only Symphony, nicknamed posthumously as the “Irish,” because music of the material came to him while on vacation in Ireland.
Fantasia will conclude with a collection of rousing Irish songs giving the audience a chance to pipe in and sing along bringing the afternoon to a festive conclusion as we celebrate the season of St. Patrick and the highly anticipated coming of Spring! What a perfect way to relax on a Sunny Sunday afternoon.
