Melting Point, Glass Art Exhibition Opening Reception at Thaddeus C. Gallery
The Thaddeus C. Gallery proudly presents "Melting Point" an art glass exhibition featuring the return of Kristin Perkins, an award winning glass jewelry artist. Kristin will be present at the reception to showcase her entire collection! This will be Kristin’s fourth exhibition with the gallery. Also on display will be the fun and functional hand blown glass vessels of Janet Zug. New works by several gallery artists including Ananda Khalsa, Richard Glass, Alison Haddon, Kent Stetson and more, will be exhibited. The exhibit will open with a reception on Friday, May 4, from 5-8pm and run through June 2nd 2018.
Kristin Perkins began making jewelry in high school, taking several courses on metalsmithing. She completed a degree in History from the University of Michigan, and after graduation she studied glass blowing at Baron Glassworks in Ypsilanti, MI, and taught herself the lampworking method. Her design aesthetic is immediately recognizable through her use of vibrant color combinations, bold geometric shapes and flowing compositions. “I’m inspired by clean, simple, yet striking shapes and by the vivid colors of nature,” she states. Kristin uses the lampworking technique which involves melting and manipulating glass rods at a torch, then annealing each bead in a kiln. She designs and makes every sterling silver setting. All of her pieces are handmade, one at a time, in her Ypsilanti MI studio.
Janet Zug started blowing glass in 1990 and over the next 14 years, rented other artist’s studios to create her designs. She worked as a studio assistant for a variety of glass blowing classes in Penland, NC and Corning, NY. Then in 2004 she installed her own glass blowing studio in her home in Vermont. “Having the freedom and ability to make bright and cheerful creations is very satisfying but my highest compliment is the feelings of joy that people have when they experience beauty through a piece of my work.” Janet’s use of deep jewel-toned glass to create functional designs adds to the playfulness of her work.
The exhibition is free to the public and runs May 4 through June 2, 2018. The Thaddeus C. Gallery is located at 822 Lincolnway, Downtown La Porte. Regular hours are Tues, Thurs, Fri and Sat, 10am-3pm, or by appointment. For more information call 219-326-8626 or email at info@thaddeusc.com
