Paws for a Cause- La Porte County 4-H
In recognition of National Volunteer Month, county 4-H members will lead community projects to give back to the community on Saturday, April 28. The effort is part of a month-long 4-H True Leaders in Service initiative with thousands of youth nationwide rolling up their sleeves in service to their local communities.
La Porte County 4-H Junior Leaders will be hosting, “Paws for a Cause,” a service event designed to create dog toys and collect items for local animal shelters and rescues in need. Paws for a Cause is scheduled for 1 p.m.-4 p.m. at the La Porte County Fairgrounds Small Projects Building. This is a family-friendly event open to all members of the community. For a list of items to donate, please visit the La Porte County 4-H Junior Leaders website at: http://bit.ly/LPJuniorLeaders.
“My Junior Leaders group and I wanted to a community service this year that was outside of the box. We wanted to do something that was interactive with our community,” said Kirsten Lambert, 4-H Junior Leader President, “I believe it is very important for young people to be involved in community service. It helps young ones know you can always help someone without receiving something in return as well as teaching them how to become a successful leader in our community and how to be responsible, which is someone others can look up to.”
4-H True Leaders in Service is a new national initiative launching in the 4-H community for the first time this year, but the idea of service is not a new one for 4-H’ers. A Tufts University national longitudinal survey showed 4-H’ers are four times more likely to contribute to their communities in service.
“4-H is more than 100 years old, and we know we wouldn’t be thriving in this county without the help of many of our friends and neighbors, past and present,” said MaryJo Moncheski, one of the county’s 4-H Positive Youth Development Extension Educators with Purdue University Cooperative Service. “As a way of saying thanks, we are joining with thousands of 4-H’ers and other volunteers from around the state to organize a True Leaders in Service National 4-H Day of Service on April 28th. We hope to have a great turnout on item collection so we can help fulfill the many wish lists from our local animal shelters and rescues across the Region.”
